As renewable energy goals to achieve a 100% clean energy grid come closer, there needs to be a solution to replace the grid-stabilizing force of all the generators that will no longer be online providing spinning mass. The addition of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as solar and battery energy storage systems creates a problem for this conventional means of ensuring grid stability because these energy sources use inverters rather than spinning mass to regulate the flow of electrical power. This white paper explores the concept of synthetic inertia, the technologies behind it and how it could be the optimal solution to stabilize an electric grid powered by DERs.
