The process of splitting molecules to create hydrogen is both complex and energy intensive. Of the two main electrolyzer technologies commercially available, proton exchange membrane (PEM) and alkaline, alkaline tends to be less expensive, but alkaline electrolyzers can be more sensitive to power fluctuations, which are inevitable with renewable energy. In Andy Miller’s NACE article “The Path to Easy and Affordable Green Hydrogen,” he discusses some of the issues and solutions related to producing green hydrogen economically.
