New case study: Renewable microgrids for EV charging centers

Concept rendering for Rove full-service charging center with dozens of EV charging stations under solar canopies, plus a car wash and small market.

This case study profiles the configuration of Rove’s new EV charging centers. With one center in Santa Ana, California, just opened and several more scheduled for later this year, these centers provide a model for electric vehicle charging station sustainability and resiliency.

The centers feature solar PV canopies and battery energy storage for both resiliency and ROI purposes. Configured as a microgrid, the center can island from the main power grid during grid outage events, relying on solar production and battery backup to continue delivering power. The solar PV and battery also function to maximize profits by shifting the center’s power consumption from the main grid away from expensive peak pricing periods.
