Projects will improve the stability of renewable generation sources for the island of Guam

When it comes to grid stability and reliability, PXiSE software and expertise continue to earn favor with the Guam Power Authority (GPA). GPA is weaning itself off fossil fuels and has declared goals of providing 50% of the island’s electric power from renewable or non-greenhouse gas emissions sources by 2030 and 100% by 2040. With approximately a 200 MW load spread across 1,800 miles of transmission and distribution lines, the small, vertically integrated utility is pioneering grid management tools to manage the influx of highly variable solar PV generation sources on a grid with low inertia.

PXiSE controls have been an essential part of GPA’s successful formula which integrates solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) with high-speed controls to manage ramp rates and frequency. In several upcoming solar PV + BESS installations, PXiSE will provide its high-speed controls for solar PV farms ranging from 4.4 to 26.4 MW. The controls will ensure functionality including:

  • Precise ramp control, PV smoothing and energy shifting
  • Independent solar PV and BESS dispatch functions while maintaining battery storage state of charge (SOC) in accordance with GPA’s grid service requirements
  • Capability to provide rapid reserve in response to under-frequency events
  • Ability to supervise black start initialization to bring power plants back online

In total, PXiSE has been newly awarded seven projects in 2024 to support GPA in the coming months and years. Once deployed, these projects will not only strengthen GPA’s grid, but will offer proven, scalable, and economical solutions for other islands seeking to increase the amount of renewable power generation without sacrificing power quality for their customers.
